One of the most colourful stones found in Indonesia is Jasper - an impure, opaque variety of quartz that can be found in almost any colour. The stone displays unique patterns from stripes to spots to landscape-like motifs. This charming gem’s name derived from old French jaspre which means "spotted or speckled stone". Jasper stone is formed as quartz crystals interact with other minerals and colouring elements present in sediments or ash at the time of formation. Iron, for instance can cause purple, blue, yellow, orange or red colouring. Also referred to as orbicular Jasper, this variety of Jasper comes in a wide range of colours (including green, yellow, pink, grey, red and cream), with orb-like inclusions/zoning and typically displays flower-like patterns.
Although commonly referred to as Jasper, the most recent research suggests it is the mineral chalcedony instead.
